Columbo Actor Peter Falk Gets Hollywood Star Jul 26th 2013, 12:28

Late actor Peter Falk, best known for his portrayal of police detective Columbo, has been honoured with a star on Hollywood's Walk of Fame.

Falk was awarded the star back in 1991 but did not get around to arranging an installation ceremony before his death in 2011 at the age of 83.

However his star has now been posthumously unveiled on Hollywood Boulevard next to that of his friend Joe Mantegna, who paid tribute to the late actor.

"The only way we could have gotten him here would have been to tell him it was to do extensive rehearsals for it," Mantegna joked.

"They can walk down this boulevard and glance down and be able to say, `Hey, I know that actor. He's the one that made me laugh, made me cry. Made me think.'

“The star is not for you, Peter. It's for them, your fans."

Falk first played Lieutenant Columbo in Prescription: Murder, a 1968 TV-movie. From 1971-1978 Columbo aired regularly on NBC.

The dishevelled detective returned to screens in 1989 and the show ran until 2003.

Falk won four Emmys for his role as Columbo.

He also enjoyed a successful film career, earning two Oscar nominations in 1960 and 1961.
