Subject: Angelina Jolie Honours Malala's Education Fund
| A fund set up by Malala Yousafzai, who was shot by the Taliban for campaigning for girls' education, is to send 40 girls to school in her home region with the support of US actor Angelina Jolie. Schoolgirl Malala announced the fund’s first project in a video message from Britain to the Women in the World Conference in New York. The 15-year-old has been receiving medical attention in Birmingham since the attack on her school bus last October.
Malala has become an international symbol of resistance to the Taliban efforts to deny women's rights and is even among nominees for this year's Nobel Peace Prize. Speaking at the first day of the conference in New York, Jolie recounted the schoolgirl's ordeal. "They shot her at point-blank range in the head - and made her stronger," she said. "In a brutal attempt to silence her voice, it grew louder and she more resolute, calling on the entire world, not just Pakistan, to ensure the right for every girl and boy for an education." Following the attack, the non-governmental organisation Vital Voices established the Malala Fund, with a donation from the Women in the World Foundation. The Fund will be directed by Malala herself. Malala, who has resumed her studies in England, said she will use the fund to help with the education of girls in Pakistan. She is making a good recovery from surgery in which doctors mended parts of her skull with a titanium plate and inserted a cochlear implant to help restore hearing on her left side. |
